Eirik Lie

Born in Oslo, Norway (lived in Trondheim, Norway 1967-1997).

• Played with, and wrote music for many rock, jazz, and blues groups, some of them are:
  • Bodega Band, a 17-piece students big band considered among Norway's best. The list of guest artists includes Clark Terry and Karin Krog. The band also has played at the Molde Jazz Festival, played national radio and TV, and made 3 albums of original music in the seventies.
  • Naboens Rockeband, a 4-piece rock band playing mostly fifties rock'n'roll and sixties British rock. Made two albums (1976 and 77).
  • ELVerket, a 5-piece funk/fusion band playing mostly original music, but also covers of songs by American jazzrockers like George Duke and Steve Khan.
  • Milorg Blues Band, a 6-piece blues band, played national radio and TV, and made music for a feature-length movie (Krypskyttere, 1982).
  • Bæverfjords Bataljon, a 6-piece blues/rock band.

    All these bands have done extensive touring all over Norway (in all kinds of weather!).
    There have also been a lot of temporary band projects.

• 1969 - 1980: Active in the music and theatre circuit among the Students in Trondheim. With the students' theatre group Studentenes Interne Teater (SIT), I was composer and orchestra leader on several productions:
  • 1977: Vi har det på Tunga, a rock opera about prisoners in a Trondheim jail.
  • 1977: Rødhette og Ulven (Little Red Riding Hood), I think you know the story.
  • 1978: Stop The World, I Want To Got Off, (only orchestra leader, the original music was good enough!)
  • 1979: Ræggeti, the UKA revue.

• 1973 - 1984: Regularly played in the orchestra pit of Trøndelag Teater, the main theatre in Middle Norway.

• Occasional work as a studio or backing musician for top Norwegian artists.

• 1980: With Inki Storleer and Gry Sveen started the fringe theatre group Det Lille Musikkteater (now changed their name to MagnaVox). Worked as composer, musician, and light designer on these productions:
  • 1980: Kom, Pontefilius, kom (200 performances!)
  • 1981: Velkommen hjem, Henrik
  • 1984: The Brand New Sisters (national radio and TV)
  • 1985: Ut I Det Blå

  Extensive touring all over Norway.

• 1981: Ambient music for the exhibition Åpen/Lukket Form (Open/Closed Shape), Trondhjems Kunstforening (Trondheim's main art gallery).

• 1984: Wrote and played the music for Too Many Guns, Too Few Brains, a performance with the poets: Rudolf Børø, Gry Sveen, Jan Even Lian, Bjørn-Erik Hanssen og Ivar Haugen, arranged by Trøndersk Forfatterlag (local writers' guild). Director: Kari Levang.

• Wrote music for the following video and short film productions:
  • 1981: Trappa (The Staircase). Director: Gunnar Kiberg. Exerpts on national TV.
  • 1986: Too Many Guns, Too Few Brains Director: Bjørn-Erik Hanssen.
  • 1988: Speilbilder (Mirror Images) Director: Marit Haug.
  • 1991: Bak Stengte Dører I (Behind Closed Doors I) Director: Marit Haug.
  • 1991: Bak Stengte Dører II (Behind Closed Doors II) Director: Marit Haug.
  • 1991: Bak Stengte Dører III (Behind Closed Doors III) Director: Marit Haug.

    Most of these has been shown at the Kortfilmfestivalen, the main Norwegian short film festival.

• 1986-1994: Worked with Petrusjka Teater as composer, musician, light designer, technician, driver and accountant(!). Made music and light design for the following productions:
  • 1987: Dukkemakerens Drøm (The Puppetmaker's Dream)
  • 1988: Ravno
  • 1989: Teater Dukker
  • 1990: Hvad Djævelen nøler I efter? (musical editor only)
  • 1992: Grand Aperitif
  • 1992: ERT (The Pea)
  • 1993: Blå Tanker (Blue Thoughts)
  • 1994: ERT for TV (TV adaption)

    In addition to Norway, Petrusjka Teater has also done extensive touring in Finland, Sweden, Denmark, France, Germany, Yugoslavia, Poland, Estonia and Canada, and the theatre has won several prizes at international festivals. Also been shown on Norwegian and Yugoslavian national TV.

• 1988 - 1989: Musician, arranger and co-composer with the Dutch Theatre Clown Lexis (Lex van Someren)
  National TV. Touring in Norway and France. Cassette release.

• 1990: Cultural scholarship from the town of Trondheim

• 1991: Co-producer on the CD Sangen vi glemte (The Forgotten Song) by Frode Fjellheim, a fusion of jazz and ethnic Lappish music.

• 1993: Made music and sound effects for the installation 112 Par Sko (112 Pair of Shoes), at the 100-year memorial of the big landslide in Verdal in 1893 (worst accident in Norway, with 112 people killed), at Stiklestad Nasjonale Kulturhus (Stiklestad National Cultural Center).

• 1994: Made music and sound effects for the installation Hugin Og Munin, a kind of theme park based on Norse mythology, at Stiklestad Nasjonale Kulturhus (Stiklestad National Cultural Center).

• 1996: Made music, sounds, and lighting design for the production Limbo by Teater Visuell, written and performed by Annika Udo. Director: Hartmut Lorenz, Berlin.

• 1996: First solo CD release: 12 Bilder (12 Images), on own label: Visuell Musikk (Visual Music), containing new, revised versions of some of the above mentioned music for theatre, installations, and video, and also some previously unused material.

• 1997: Made music and sound effects for a multimedia installation in the new ski museum at Trøndelag Folkemuseum, as part of the opening of the 1997 World Skiing Championships in Trondheim.

• 1997: Made music, sounds, and lighting design for the production Reisen (The Journey) by Teater Visuell, written and performed by Annika Udo. Director: Hartmut Lorenz, Berlin.

• 1997: Represented on the compilation CD Sonic Circuits V, issued by the American Composers Forum as part of their annual Sonic Circuits Electro-Acoustic Music Festivals in USA and Canada.

• 1998 - 1999: Musician and co-composer on the two CDs Smalltown Circus and 2063, from the multifaceted artist Fredrik Hossmann.

• 1999: Lighting design for the production 48 Timer (48 Hours) by Teater Visuell, written and performed by Annika Udo. Director: Hartmut Lorenz, Berlin.

• 2000: Musician on the CD production Nattas Prinsesse (Princess Of The Night) by Frode Fjellheim and Iren Reppen on the label Kirkelig Kulturverksted.

• 2000: Sound design for the website Futurama by NRK (Norwegian National Broadcasting Company).

• 2001: Made sound design for the "Akerselva" project, a permanent, moving installation in the river flowing through Oslo, by artist Gunnar Hølmebakk Gundersen.

• 2002: Sound design for the exhibition/installation Alle Mine Hemmeligheter (All My Secrets) by Fredrik Hossmann at the Deichmanske Bibliotek (Public Library of Oslo).

• 2003: Sound design for the Wind Project Höfgen, a sound installation generating music from wind movements, made for the international "ECHO - Klang & Skulptur" in Grimma, Germany.
